An employee recommendation letter, also known as a letter of recommendation, is a document requested by a candidate from a former professional contact. The letter is addressed to a specific person or organization that may become the candidate’s future employer.
In this letter, the recommender provides a testimonial and confirms the employee’s competence and suitability for a particular job. The recommender is usually someone who knows the employee professionally and can confidently describe the candidate’s abilities, achievements, and work ethic. Through this letter, the recommender endorses the candidate for a specific position.
There are three main types of recommendation letters:
- Academic Recommendation Letter
- Employment Recommendation Letter
- Character Recommendation Letter
When a candidate requests a recommendation letter for employment, the recommender makes an effort to demonstrate that the candidate is the right choice for a particular position.
However, this letter should not be written by just anyone. The recommender should be a professional reference who can vouch for the candidate as a qualified, capable, and reliable individual for the concerned role.
A professional reference may include someone who knows the candidate well, such as a former employer, manager, mentor, teacher, colleague, or client.
Although recommendation letters do not have a formal expiration date, their value may decrease over time as circumstances and industry requirements change. For example, skills related to outdated software or technologies may no longer be relevant after newer systems are introduced.
A letter of recommendation is different from a letter of reference. While both serve as testimonials, a recommendation letter is specifically written for a particular job and addressed to a specific person or organization. In contrast, a reference letter is more general and can be used for multiple purposes.

Subject: Recommendation for Mr. Bill Walter
Dear Ms. Laura,
It is my great pleasure to recommend Mr. Bill Walter as he seeks employment with “The Burgrisp.” I served as Mr. Walter’s supervisor for two years while he worked at my company, “The [X].” Overall, he worked with us for three years.
Mr. Walter was initially hired as a member of the Sales Department. However, after demonstrating exceptional teamwork, communication, and leadership skills, he was transferred to the Human Resources Department. Based on his outstanding performance and professional capabilities, I highly recommend him for the HR position at your company.
He proved to be a valuable asset to our organization. During his tenure, he played a major role in restructuring our HR system, which increased the department’s productivity by 12% within one year. In addition, the employee turnover rate was significantly reduced.
Throughout his employment with us, Mr. Walter consistently delivered excellent performance. His dedication, professionalism, and positive attitude were evident in every task he handled. He not only performed his own responsibilities efficiently but also motivated and supported his team members. He is highly skilled, dependable, and capable of handling responsibilities with confidence and professionalism.
I have no reservations in recommending Mr. Walter for the position of HR Assistant Manager at your company. I am confident that he will prove to be a valuable addition to your organization as well.
Please feel free to contact me if you require any further information.
Sincerely,
Greg Bills
