To keep track of employees’ punctuality, almost all organizations keep track of the time when an employee arrives at work and when the employee leaves. Most organizations have a 40 hour work week and employees are expected to complete all 40 hours in order to receive full pay.
There are several ways how organizations can supervise employee punctuality and minimize absenteeism. Large organizations may install sophisticated systems such as thumbprint scanners, or eye scanners to record employee arriving at and leaving work. These systems, however, are expensive and not suitable for small organizations, or shops. Therefore, most small organizations and businesses use the sign in and sign out sheets.
A sign in sheet is usually prepared for each month separately. It is maintained at the entrance of the office or at the reception. Every employee must sign against their name on the sign-in sheet and also write down the exact time when they came into office.

Usually, the attendance is maintained on a pre-printed form that has columns for every day of the month and a column to note downtime. Even if a business is not investing in such a form, then they usually use a simple register where the employee writes down their own name, date and time. The purpose remains the same.
A sign out sheet records when an employee is leaving work. Again the employee signs their name and mentions the time when they left. This may be a separate sheet or may be the same sign in sheet with an additional column for sign out time. The records for the sign in and sign out sheets are compiled at the end of the month and analyzed before employee pay cheques are drafted.
Nowadays the focus of some organizations seems to have shifted from standard to flexible hours. Many organizations are also more interested in the quality of work and work completion rather than the arrival and leaving time of employees.
This management model may seem to be suitable for creative and research work domains; however, it is not very suitable for routine work or work descriptions that involve customer interaction. Imagine no sign in and sign out sheets for a salesman in a shop, he/ might never be there during peak times, may not arrive on time or leave right before peak time.
Although more and more organizations now seem to focus on productivity and performance rather than time; sign in and sign out sheets are still important for both employees and employers.
Whether an employee is paid by the hour or by the month; in both cases, the employee can use this record as proof of their punctuality. In case, an employer is paying less, an employee can use the record to prove that he/she is being paid less than the actual hours worked.
Similarly, it also serves as a good check on employees for the employer so poor performers can be identified and corrective action can be taken. Integrity from both the employee and employer are important.
Arriving at and leaving work on time are a key component of the contract between the two parties. Employers pay for employee’s hard work and punctuality.
